Canceled: March 1st Board Game Meeting – Board Games for all to play

by GeorgiaBoardgamer on Feb.22, 2008, under board game events, boardgame meetups

Sorry folks.  I will reschedule soon.

Our next Georgia Boardgames Association meeting will be Saturday, March 1st from 12:30 to about 4:30. It will be at the same location as before, The Atlanta Bread Company, near Town Center Mall in Kennesaw. The location is on Barrett Parkway, convenient to I-75 and 575. The website and map are available by clicking here.

One quick note. I know this may upset some folks, but I feel like I should say something. I hope no one is offended. Since we are meeting at a restaurant – for free – I think it would be good if everyone could buy something to eat or drink. Most people do and I understand that some people cannot, but try and do what you can. Even if you only buy a drink it would be good and make our group welcome. No one has ever complained at the business. I just thought it would be polite. Essentially, we are getting to play for four hours for only a few dollars or less. Your purchase doesn’t reserve us anything so please don’t think that either. It is merely to be polite and thankful to the business for allowing us to play there. Thank you for your understanding.

I will have board games, but you are welcome to bring your own. I can’t guarantee everyone will get to play their favorite boardgame, but there should be a good selection to choose from. I have my games posted on www.georgiaboardgames.com and bring most of them. The game selection changes periodically, so check back to see if your game is listed.

The Atlanta Bread Company has a great menu selection of sandwiches, salads, soups, and bakery goods. Coffee and soft drinks are also available. Prices are from about $1.59 – $6.50. You should plan on buying something to help the business – a small drink, if nothing else, is fine. No outside food or drink, please.

I hope you enjoy yourself, and RSVP if you can.

I look forward to meeting everyone. There is no cost to attend.

Last time we had a great time learning new games. At least they were new to me. So feel free to bring your own games, just be cognizant of the time it takes to play them. Since most games don’t take three to four hours to play, just about anything should be okay. This also means you don’t have to come in at exactly 12:30. Last meeting we ate lunch, played games, and played more games. Great fun.

I hope to see you there.

15 People at our Georgia Boardgames Association Game Day

by GeorgiaBoardgamer on Jan.27, 2008, under board game events, board game pictures, boardgame meetups

Wow, we had 15 people today at our Georgia Boardgames Association meetup.  Some familiar faces and some new people too.  I’m not sure all the games that were played, but what I saw was:

Wyatt Earp

Bohnanza

Ticket to Ride and Ticket to Ride 1910

Carcassonne (lots of folks huddled around this huge tile game)

Walk the Dogs (for the kids playing board games)

Triominos (haven’t seen that one in a while, but fun)

Sequence (adult version)

Blokus

We even had one play test of a new game from a local game inventor.  Interesting looking game.  I wish we could have all helped you.

We had over 30 games available this month, and I wish we could have played them all.  Thanks to everyone who brought their games.  I would have loved to played Race for the Galaxy, Shogun, and Augsburg 1520,but we just didn’t have time this month.

Thank you all for coming and I hope you had a great time.  Look for information on future Georgia Boardgame Assocation meetings soon.   Don’t forget to check out our blog at www.georgiaboardgames.com.  I have articles, board game reviews, and soon hope to get our pod cast going.  It’s all hard work but worth it.  I’m especially pleased to see so many people coming from as far as 50 miles away, and I’m glad the GBA could provide the opportunity for you.

I have a special thank you for all the board game teachers today.  It’s hard to remember how to play all the board games let alone know them well enough to teach others to enjoy them.  I had my opportunity to teach Wyatt Earp today and it was a little harder to teach than I thought it would be.  Thankfully I had players eager and patient to learn.

Again, thanks to all who attended today, and I’m looking forward to next month’s board game meetup.

December 1st Board Game Day Meeting

by GeorgiaBoardgamer on Dec.08, 2007, under board game events, boardgame meetups

It was great.  I met new people and learned a new game: Gheos by Zman.  It was very nice and well done.  Settlers, For Sale, and San Juan were also enjoyed, but not as much as the company.  Thanks everyone for making it a great board game day.

October 6th Open Gaming Meetup

by GeorgiaBoardgamer on Oct.06, 2007, under board game events, boardgame meetups

I just returned from our latest Georgia Boardgames Association meetup. I met four new people, learned two new games, and played a third better than before. First, I wanted to say thanks to every one who came and played. You’re very nice people and great teachers. I didn’t have one dull moment. Okay, there was this one moment where someone got up to buy some freshly baked bread, while we all waited :) , but other than that it was non-stop board gaming.

Our first game was Vegas Showdown. It was the first time I had played. And since I am a fan of auction games, it worked out well for everyone. I lost, but at least I now have another game to purchase. Our second game was For Sale, another auction game, that acted as a nice filler until our last game of Citadels.

I had only played Citadels with three people, but this game had six. It lasted longer than expected, but it was worth it. One of the highlights of the Citadels game was the confirmation that I was not alone on one thing: There is no good way to assasinate your wife. For those who have not played Citadels, you can assassinate another player’s character. You don’t know who has the character, but after you play someone over and over, you can guess, sometimes, what a person will pick. The husband and wife team today had played a lot of Citadels, and I think the husband may been using past experience to guess his wife’s card. Well, he was right, but as I’ve told one of my sons before, “Even if you’re right, you’re wrong.” In reality, I’m embellishing, she took it well, even though it was close to the end fo the game. I think she was being picked on because next round the thief stole all her money (not buy her husband, whew!)

Folks came from all over today. We had a gentleman from fifty miles away this time and this gave me the idea for our new rule, where the person that comes from the farthest, gets to pick the game. I also wanted to apologize to a nice person that didn’t have a game to play at first. I’m glad you stayed. I’ll try and have a one player game for this situation in the future.

Again, thanks to everyone that came. If you didn’t make it this time, I hope you can come to the next board game meeting.

October 6th Meeting Open Gaming

by GeorgiaBoardgamer on Sep.18, 2007, under board game events

Hello,

Our next Georgia Boardgames Association meeting will be October 6th from 12:30 to about 4:30. It will be at the same location as before, The Atlanta Bread Company, near Town Center Mall in Kennesaw. The location is on Barrett Parkway, convenient to I-75 and 575. The website and map are available by clicking here.

The Atlanta Bread Company has a great menu selection of sandwiches, salads, soups, and bakery goods. Coffee and soft drinks are also available. Prices are from about $5.29 – $6.50 for meals with specialty drinks and bakery items costing less. You’re not required to eat there, but you will enjoy it if you do. No outside food or drink, please.

Free stuff will also be provided by Georgia Boardgames. There will be a drawing of participants for a $5.00 gift certificate to The Atlanta Bread Company and a free large soft drink and cookie for the runner up, provided at least five people attend to draw from.

I know this meetup may be a little quick, not quite a full month between meetups, but I cannot make it on the 13th or the 20th and didn’t want it to be the last date of October because, well, that’s just too long to wait. I opted for the quicker date. I hope this is okay with everyone.

Great First Meetup

by GeorgiaBoardgamer on Sep.15, 2007, under board game events

Hello,

To everyone who couldn’t make our first meetup, I hope to see you at the next one. I was pleased with this first meetup. We only had a couple of folks that came, but I grateful for the two that did come. They brought their games and were kind enough to share the games and their expertise. Their patience in teaching this slow to learn gamer were especially appreciated. With your help, next month we can make it an even better game day. Again, don’t worry about missing our first meetup. Next month’s meeting will be even better, and I truly appreciate the people that came today.

We were able to play three games:

Zooleretto

Ra

Ingenious

Hopefully I can give my thoughts on those great games in another post.  Until then, thank you.

Note:  To “Nancy” I hope you can make it to the next meetup.  I didn’t get a chance to see what types of board games you were interested in, but the folks that helped us today were very nice and able to teach.

Our first board games meetup for the Georgia Boardgames Association

Here we are playing Ingenious – Thanks for the patient teaching!

My secret tiles can now be revealed (I lost) :) .

Well, you can’t really see the board games, but here they are, one box was covered

You can’t really see all the board games, but there were probably between 20 or 30.
